Happy birthday Mr. Kindle – Five years on…

Yes, I know, right!

Was there EVER a time when we read proper books? I mean, with actual pages? Surely not?

It’s a bit like when I tried to explain to my nephew the other night that we only had three tv channels once upon a time. He just stared at my from beneath his floppy fringe and grinned – like I was making stuff up. It took a show of solidarity from my sister and brother-in-law to convince him that such a Draconian thing was possible.

Happy birthday to yoooooou.

This little beauty is five today.

Capture

Yes, five.

And everything has changed. Forever.

I’m not going to talk about the publishing industry in general, my long-suffering writer mate Mark Williams bangs on about that enough over at his blog, so I’ll leave that to him, but the digital landscape is not the same as it was when the Kindle first hit the virtual shelves, that’s for sure.

One thing that hasn’t changed however, is that Sugar & Spice was – and always will be – the first indie title to reach number two in the Kindle store.

Yep, our very own baby is all grown-up and to celebrate, Amazon are doing some birthday promo for us. Check it, and other featured titles, out on their home page here.

Of course, nothing ever stays the same and the Kindle is no exception. With the advance of technology, the latest offering from the Amazon boys and girls is a super-duper far cry from the beast that first brought us e-reading. Their new Kindle Voyage is an all-singing and dancing star of an ereader and a million years ahead of anything else out there.

It might even make you a cuppa.

So, what’s next? And well you might ask, but I don’t have a crystal ball. We didn’t know back then, that we’d be translated into a multitude of different languages, have hit the top spot in China and go on to sell over a million books. Crazy eh?

Nobody can know what the future holds (despite what Mr. Williams will have you believe) but we know one thing: people will always love to read – however they choose to do it, and whilst they love to read, we gotta keep writing! ;-)

Happy Thanksgiving…but hold the turkey

I’m pretty sure that right about now, most of you are gathered around the Tevo with your loved ones, watching the game, eagerly awaiting that yummy roast bird.

Am I right?

Of course I am.

I bet you’ve also been browsing the net/shops for early ‘Black Friday’ deals too. Maybe bought yourself a book or three for your Kindle/e-reader? On the next none-dark day that had a countdown….

TICK, TOCK, TICK, TOCK..

Here in the UK (and probably every where else across the globe) the mighty ‘Zon have been ramming deals down our throats for the past week now and it’s not even the weekend.

By the time it gets to Friday, they’ll have no stock left to discount.

Just like Christmas: when it gets here, you’re sick of hearing about it.

Well, you can keep your pumpkin pie and turkey for 2014 – I’m having Chinese.

Three weeks ago, the fabulous team at startup digital publishers FIBEREAD completed the translation and formatting on our international bestseller ‘Sugar & Spice‘. The Chinese branch of Amazon uploaded it to Amazon.cn and we – well, we kinda did nothing. We couldn’t understand the site, nor did we have any control over promotion or distribution, so we ‘liked’ the Chinese version of the cover and went on about our business.

At the end of last week, we noticed (with the help of Bing translate) that we were #1 in three obscure categories and were bobbing around just outside the Amazon China Top 100 Kindle Store.

This morning, this happened:

Yep. We hit the top spot.

#1 in the Top 100 Amazon.cn store.

Ahead of JK Rowling, Dan Brown and George Martin. Oh, and some guy called Asimov.

Three years since it was first published and 350,000 sales later (40,000 of which were hardback sales in France), we’ve got another number one on our hands. This time, it’s in one of the largest ebook marketplace in the world.

Let’s see what happens…

Enjoy the turkey, I’m ringing for takeout.

Happy Thanksgiving!

An early Christmas present – FREE festive short story ‘The Night Before Christmas’

Everyone likes something for nothing, right? Of course you do.

In anticipation of our new Rose Red Rhymes short thriller LONDON’S BURNING being released, we thought we’d sprinkle a little decorative dust on that manic time between Bonfire Night and the main event. So when you’ve finished tramping around the shops, hauled those heavy bags home and slumped into your favourite chair by the fire with a steaming mug of hot chocolate, why not relax with a little Christmas short to get you in the mood?
